Gram Mitra’s timely call led to the rescue of a child in Rajasthan
Rajesh, a dedicated Gram Mitra from Phoolwada village, actively participated, absorbed the information and understood his crucial role as a ‘Friend of a village’ during our Safe Village Program and Grassroots Stakeholders’ Training. Recently, he put that knowledge into timely action.
Just a few metres from his village, Rajesh noticed that a 13-year-old Zayd* was being exploited at a manufacturing shop.
He was working in the scorching sun, manufacturing doors and railings in hazardous conditions that threatened his health and safety.
Remembering his training, Rajesh did not hesitate. He immediately contacted our Implementing Partner, Gramrajya Vikas Evam Prashikshan Sansthan and reported what he had seen. He called My Choices Foundation Helpline at 1800 419 8588 and CHILDLINE 1098. This single call sparked an immediate and coordinated response.
With the support of the local police, an operation was launched under the Umang-5 campaign. The team inspected Zayd’s workplace, documented video evidence of the child labour and successfully rescued Zayd.
The boy was presented before the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), and his parents were counselled on the dangers of exploitative labour. The shop owner was issued a stern warning against employing children under 18.
Zayd is back at school, learning to dream beyond the manufacturing walls. And, our team continued to keep close watch on the shop for child labour.
When the shop owner disregarded the warning and employed a child again, the team was ready. Armed with the video evidence, they pursued further legal action on June 6, 2025. With police assistance, Zayd was again brought before the CWC and safely handed over to his father. The case has now been registered, ensuring the perpetrator faces the full weight of the law.
Rajesh’s story is a powerful reminder that our work is creating a network of informed and courageous individuals across India. He was not just a bystander; he was an empowered changemaker who knew exactly what to do. His actions highlight the success of our Safe Village Program and the power of Grassroots Stakeholders in the community. You are building a strong system of change: an alert Gram Mitra, a responsive organisational structure and a strong collaboration with local authorities.
You are equipping everyday people to become extraordinary protectors. Thank you for being the heart of our mission and for turning villages into safe havens, one vigilant voice at a time.
